Mel Gibson's Infamous DUI Expunged
Last week, a Malibu judge agreed to expunge Mel Gibson’s now infamous 2006 DUI. That was the incident where Gibson not only threatened the Los Angeles County Sheriff who stopped him but also blamed the Jews for all the world’s wars.
Despite Gibson’s anti-Semitic rant and other bizarre behavior, the judge granted his California DUI expungement because he completed his court-ordered probation.
You are eligible for an expungement under California’s DUI expungement laws if:
- you were placed on probation,
- you successfully completed that probation,
- you aren’t currently serving a sentence for another crime,
- and you have no other pending criminal charges.
The good news is that California DUI expungements are routinely granted, so long as you fulfill the legal requirements. California DUI expungement laws make it so that you no longer have to disclose your DUI on job applications.
The bad news is that the DUI will still count as a prior if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of picking up a new DUI within California’s ten-year lookback period. Even so, the benefits of a California DUI expungement certainly outweigh the disadvantages, making it a very worthwhile request.
